Colour Reference

The Batiri are as colourful as they are characterful, bloodthirsty creatures. Decorated in wide jungle leaves, dinosaur bones and trinkets from unwary adventurers who dare explore the jungles of Chult. I find having the colour image close by is invaluable reference.

Colour Overview

With so many brands of paint available, I have picked the colour swatches I have used for each part instead. This guide shows the different colour tones, ink washes, and stages I have applied in order.

Colour Reference I always find it invaluable to have the colour reference or character art in front of me while I paint, especially something this good - I mean evil :) His palette is quite limited to warm reds, fire, bright gold and a green-grey skin colour. Colour Overview With so many brands of paint available, this guide shows the different tones and  stages I have applied in order. Body Scales I normally start with the largest or the hardest part to reach, in this case his scales. I am only going to paint a small part so you can see the differences in the tones as I progress through each stage.   This is the colour range I have chosen for the warm red tones.       The thin basecoat of Black Red 859 is liberally applied over the area.       Followed ...

Demogorgon Painting Guide

View the Demogorgon spotlight here... Check out the Demogorgon assembly here... You can find Demogorgon in our online store here... As described in the assembly guide, I recommend you paint the main body and the base as separate parts attached on their individual stands and sprayed with a primer, I use a grey colour. Any imperfections can easily be seen at this point and any further cleaning completed. Colour palette Regardless of what paint brand you use, the overall colour palette for the Demogorgon is olive green, warm brown and light sourced fire colours. Quick coverage and early blending with an airbrush Using the airbrush allows you to cover a lot of area in fast, smooth coats and is very good at producing flawless blending otherwise only achieved with many layers of thinned down paint. One of the benefits with this system is that you can make large jumps with the lighter tones, instead of small changes in the lighter colour tones.   Airb ...

With the components cleaned up and attached to their individual painting stands, they are then sprayed with a mid-grey primer. Any more imperfections can easily be seen at this point and any further cleaning completed. Colour palette for Valindra Regardless of what paint brand you use the overall palette for Valindra is dark red, cream for her bandages and a light field blue tone for her skin.   Ragged dress I generally start painting the largest part on the model; in this case it is her dress. Starting with a dark red basecoat, it was soon apparent that the stage by stage photos where not showing up the detail as I wanted, so I have used extra bright images from the finished miniature and I will explain my methods as we go. After the initial basecoat, the whole dress was washed with a dee ...

Colour palette Regardless of what paint brand you use, the overall palette for Graz’zt is a dark, rich colour scheme of midnight blue, deep purple and black. This reflects the ostentatious dress-sense of Graz’zt and his decadent nature.   Skin tone I generally start painting the largest part on the model; in this case it is his dark blue skin. Dracolich Painting Guide

Painting equipment Brushes I cannot stress enough about buying high quality brushes for the bulk of your painting, preferably Kolinsky sable. My favourite are Windsor & Newton series 7 in sizes ‘00’ ‘0’ and ‘1’.   Palette There are many available on the market, but I keep coming back to the cheapest and re-useable; a rectangle of cardboard wrapped in ordinary brown tape. (They grow over time!) Acrylic paint does not like new over old, as it re-hydrates and breaks apart, leaving fragments in your mix. Brown tape avoids all that. Preparing miniatures for painting As part of the production process, the silicon mould which the resin is poured into has release agents in it, which are sometimes transferred onto the miniature. It is recommended that you wash the miniatures in warm, soapy water and make sure they are completely dry, before any cleaning up or spraying with primer. Primer Aerosol primer is the best way to give the m ...

Gar Shatterkeel & Water Priest Painting Guide

Water Priest Click here to view the assembly guide of Gar Shatterkeel & Water Priest As the priest is the largest and more complicated model out of the two, I have decided to paint him first. The whole colour scheme is based on a green/blue palette, starting with a warm dark green basecoat on the kelp outfit.   Two coats of dark brown ink washed were liberally applied as the shade colour. This will seep into all the cracks creating a dark border for each length of kelp.   The main Black Forest Green is re-applied along each kelp strand.   These are all the different green tones used for the kelp, in order. Skin To match the reference, the skin is a pale green colour. Instead of moving to the highlights, I have started painting the basecoats for the straps and barnacles. This will make the highlights easier to paint, around the details. The skin is now complete.   Shel ...

Water Myrmidon Painting Guide

Water Myrmidon Painting Guide With the water Myrmidon thoroughly cleaned up, I have given it an aerosol coat of mid-grey primer, this colour will pick up any imperfections or missed mould-lines. I generally begin with the largest or the most difficult area to paint on a model, in this case getting the water colours correct was a good place to start. A basecoat of Periscope Blue 309 was applied over all the water parts. To recreate the water effects, I have used wet-blending from one colour to another. This is using very thin coats of paint and gradually building up the layers, leaving a smooth transition which forms the shadows. I needed to keep the high pigments, so I moved to Scale 75 paints, which have a very dense colour even when thinned down with water. The next blue paint in the Scale 75 sequence is Adriatic Blue; I used this as a mid-tone colour in preparation for the highlights. You can see from the image the different depths of the shadow ...
